In-Store Cosmetic Demos Raise Brand Awareness

By Yana Polikarpov

Results of a customer response survey show that in-store beauty demonstrations, a tried-and-true retail technique, are a hit with consumers.

The survey was conducted by national marketing company Cosmetic Promotions, Goldenrod, Fla., between fourth quarter 2008 and first quarter 2009 at a series of events at various retailers. More than 3,000 consumers were surveyed at live demonstrations conducted by makeup artists at mass food, drug and merchandiser stores.

Ninety-six percent of respondents said they would like more of the same event at that store. Sixty percent never tried any of the demonstrated products before. Thirty-five percent expressed an intent to purchase immediately based on the demonstration, and 56 percent would purchase at a later time, with only nine percent having no purchase intent. The respondent’s age group breakdown was 25 percent under 25, 44 percent 25-50 and 31 percent over 50. Read article.

Mintel has dismissed the lipstick effect in a new report that looks into the buying habits of beauty consumers in the recession. By Guy Montague-Jones, 23-Apr-2009

Leonard Lauder coined the counter intuitive phrase “lipstick effect” to describe how sales of lipstick tend to fall when the economy slides into recession.

The idea behind the theory is that, depressed by the recession and unable to spend money on expensive luxuries, women will turn to lipstick as a “pick-me-up”.

However, Mintel claims that this time round the lipstick effect has come unstuck. Read article.

Taking Hair Color Into Their Own Hands

By Terry Trucco
New York Times, April 22, 2009

BEN STEWART, color director for Cutler salons in Manhattan and South Beach, is a sought-after colorist whose clients pay more than $250 for a tint. But in recent months, Mr. Stewart has found himself visiting the drugstore to choose do-it-yourself color for a few clients who want to do home touch-ups to stretch the time between appointments.

“You want them to continue coming to you, but you understand their needs,” Mr. Stewart said. “Better to have them do the right thing rather than totally mess up their hair.” Read article.

Project Runway will be back on August 20

on Lifetime, not Bravo...

Andrea Wong of Lifetime says, "I couldn’t be more excited that Lifetime will bring its viewers an amazing, all-new season of Project Runway this summer. As the highest-rated cable network for women, Lifetime is the perfect home for this outstanding program as well as its companion series Models of the Runway. All of us at Lifetime are thrilled to move forward with Heidi, Tim, Nina, Michael, The Weinstein Company and the entire Project Runway team. We are proud to add these shows to our growing slate of original programming, including the hit series Army Wives, the all-new upcoming series Drop Dead Diva and our top-rated original movies."

Yes, what I am about to say will sound cliché, but Lifetime better "make it work", or risk losing out on capitalizing on a great show franchise.

Encyclopedia of Beauty loves NeNe from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, because she is a headstrong woman who does not back down or take drama from anyone. Vote for your favorite "Real Housewife" to win $10,000 for their charity.

Rachel Zoe accepted the award for Marchesa (who couldn't be here tonight...) Tayyyyy! We can't lie, we love Rachel and all of her near breakdowns and personal wardrobe choices. She makes the stars look amazing.
